From April 30 to July 31, 2019, the father ofImpressionism, Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926), is on display in his native Liguria, that of the Riviera di Ponente: in Bordighera and Dolceacqua, the villages where Monet stayed in 1884(at this link you can read our detailed in-depth discussion of this stay), the exhibition Claude Monet. Return to the Riviera, in the double venue of Villa Regina Margherita (Bordighera) and the Doria Castle (Dolceacqua). The exhibition brings back to the two western villages three paintings that Monet executed during his stay: these are Le Château de Dolce acqua (“The Castle of Dolceacqua”), Vallée de Sasso. Effet de soleil (“Valley of Sasso. Sun Effect”) and Monaco, vu de Ro quebrune (“Monaco, View of Roquebrune”), which depict landscapes of Dolceacqua, Bordighera and Monaco, respectively. The first two works come from the Musée Marmottan in Paris, while the third is on loan from the private collection of Prince Albert II of Monaco. In Bordighera the public will find Vallée de Sasso. Effet de soleil, while the other two works are on display at the Doria Castle in Dolceacqua.
The exhibition, curated by Aldo Jean Herlaut, also aims to contextualize the works within the framework of the stay that Monet made in Liguria: next to the paintings, in both exhibition venues, there will therefore be a multimedia exhibition that aims to illustrate the artist’s experience during his trip to the Riviera. In addition, photographs and works from Bordighera’s civic collections and private collections will be on display to create a further path through the art produced on the Riviera in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It is possible to visit the exhibition from April 30 to June 14 daily from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from June 15 to July 31 daily from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (hours of both venues). The ticket office closes half an hour earlier. Tickets (also valid for a visit to both exhibition venues): full 9 euros, reduced 7 euros (for groups of at least 15 people and conventioned), free for children under 14, accredited journalists, tour guides. For residents of the two Ligurian municipalities there is also a Monet Card at a cost of 9 euros: it allows free access to the exhibitions for the duration of the event and a 10 percent discount on the catalog. All information can be found on the exhibition website. The project is made possible by the collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris through the work of its curator, Mme Marianne Mathieu, and the availability of Albert II of Monaco. The exhibition is sponsored by the municipalities of Bordighera and Dolceacqua, with support from the Region of Liguria and the Province of Imperia and with contributions from Compagnia di San Paolo and Permare s.r.l.
