The Mondovi Museum of Ceramics is offering from November 15, 2019 to March 15, 2020 the exhibition The Wefts of Raphael. The Restoration of the Madonna del Divino Amore Tapestry from the Pontifical Museum of Loreto, born from the collaboration between the CRC Foundation, the “La Venaria Reale” Conservation and Restoration Center, the Pontifical Museum Santa Casa di Loreto, the Museum of Ceramics and the Municipality of Mondovì.
The exhibition will focus on the tapestry depicting the Madonna of Divine Love, a work completed in the early 16th century by the Brussels manufactory on a cartoon from a work by Raphael.
The exhibition thus aims to delve into the production of the celebrated Urbino artist through the translation of his drawings on preparatory cartoons. This tapestry in fact depicts one of the best-known works of his pictorial activity: the protagonists are the Madonna and Child, St. Anne or St. Elizabeth and St. John. The masterpiece on display was part of a series woven on Raphaelesque models depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, commissioned by the bishop of Liège, Érard de la Marck. In the 17th century it became the property of Pope Alexander VIII Ottoboni, and in 1723 his nephew, Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, donated it to the Shrine of Loreto.
The antique tapestry was restored by the Conservation and Restoration Center “La Venaria Reale” on the occasion of the exhibition.
The event is part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death.
