Modern Reality Painters, a group that defended the great painting tradition, on display in Fermo

Through May 1, 2023, Fermo's Palazzo dei Priori is hosting an exhibition of eighty works by the Modern Reality Painters, a group of artists who defended and recovered the great painting tradition, from Caravaggio to Spanish and Flemish painting.

The Palazzo dei Priori in Fermo is hosting until May 1, 2023 the exhibition The Painters of Reality. Truth and Illusion between the Seventeenth and Twentieth Centuries, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi with Beatrice Avanzi and Daniela Ferrari. Realized thanks to the collaboration with the Mart in Rovereto, the exhibition aims to reread a particular season of postwar Italian art, namely the modern painters of reality: a group of artists who debuted in 1947 by lashing out against the outcomes of modernism to defend and recover the great pictorial tradition, from Caravaggio to Spanish and Flemish painting.

On display are eighty works by Gregorio Sciltian, Pietro Annigoni, the brothers Antonio and Xavier Bueno, with Giovanni Acci, Alfredo Serri, and Giorgio de Chirico, with whom they shared the need for a “return to the craft”; also present are works by important early artists, such as RubensThe Adoration of the Shepherds (on display) and Lanfranco’s Pentecost, which can be seen in the Pinacoteca rooms.

These are joined by two masterpieces by Giorgio de Chirico and works by four Modern Painters of Reality. All the members of the group approached De Chirico’s theme of the mannequin For a comparison with the moderns, works by early artists, mostly from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, who were influenced by the Caravaggesque temperament first and then by the Baroque, are finally presented. These artists include Alessandro Magnasco, the so-called Master of Hartford, Giuseppe Recco and Carlo Magini.

The exhibition is promoted by the Marche Region and the Municipality of Fermo, with the collaboration of the Mart in Rovereto and the contribution of Carifermo and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Fermo. It is also among the major cultural events of the regional project The Seventeenth Century in the Marche.
