Modena: an exhibition to celebrate the Roman legacy of "Mutina splendidissima"

Opening in Modena is "Mutina splendidissima. The Roman City and its Legacy," an exhibition marking 2,200 years since the founding of the city of Modena.

To celebrate the 2,200th anniversary of Modena’s founding, the exhibition "Mutina Splendidissima. The Roman City and its Legacy," which will run concurrently with the program of the same name, from Nov. 25, 2017 until April 8, 2018.

Described by Cicero as "firmissima et splendidissima," Mutina, one of the most important Roman colonies innorthern Italy, lies beneath the streets of the historic center, guarded by the deposits of the floods that occurred in late antiquity. The first part of the exhibition celebrates the founding of the city in 183 B.C. at the same time as Parma-the only other colony under Roman law in northern Italy-and aims to bring out the importance Mutina had in the broader picture of the history of the Republic, first, and then the Empire.

The second part of the exhibition develops the theme of Mutina’s legacy and the city’s stimulating relationship with its buried past, demonstrating its continuity over the centuries and the significant role it played in the construction of the city’s identity cultural and artistic identity of the city, especially in certain periods, such as the construction of the Romanesque cathedral by Lanfranco and Wiligelmo and the Maestri Campionesi, and the Renaissance period with the decoration of the Sala del Fuoco by Nicolò dell’Abate, an episode that attests to the city government’s desire to legitimize its authority through recalling the city’s glorious Roman origins.

Through documents and city chronicles, particularly Lancelot and Spaccini, the exhibition investigates the evolving relationship of the people of Modena with an ever-present legacy at different levels between the 14th and 17th centuries. At the conclusion of the itinerary, the theme of the affirmation of scientific interest in antiquity, to which the birth of the Civic Museum is connected, and the relationship with Romanity in the 20th century is developed, with particular attention to archaeological excavations, which were also encouraged in order to encourage direct participation by Modena in the Augustan exhibition of 1937, and to the creation of public works and monuments.
