Opening June 19 at the “Gian Battista Bosio” Civic Gallery in Desenzano is the exhibition Mimmo Paladino, eclectic artist, open to the public until Aug. 1, 2021 and curated by Giovanni Tiboni. Fifty worksby the renowned Campania-based artist are on display for this occasion, highlighting his expressive and experimental freedom. An overview of Mimmo Paladino’s production is presented, whose stylistic signature is based on archaic and Mediterranean culture that has its figurative roots in 15th- and 16th-century Italian art, from Paolo Uccello to Piero della Francesca to Leonardo da Vinci, and its philosophical roots in Renaissance Neoplatonism.
Paladino’s art is shown in its complexity, presenting his conceptual and analytical training: his is a never casual pictorial work that ranges between tradition and avant-garde and is inspired by non-European cultures. He has been a protagonist of the Transavantgarde, which is based on a return to figurative painting, in antithesis to the conceptual currents that emptied out in the 1970s. He has confronted himself with both pictorial works and large installations, managing to elaborate a language in which elements from different times and spaces blend together: elements of Egyptian, Etruscan or early Christian art through which he experiments with various techniques and different materials.
As a multifaceted artist, Paladino has also dealt with graphic work, showing over the years a particular attraction to the latter, thanks in part to his training in both figurative and literary art. Following his fantastical and visionary flair, over the course of more than three decades he has experimented in graphic work and collaborated with poets and writers to produce art books. Among the various techniques he has used etching, aquatint, woodcut, silkscreen, lithography and drypoint.
The works in the exhibition emphasize how suitable this expressive medium is for “a complete and thorough manifestation of his particular and secret imaginative world.”
