Van Cleef & Arpels: Time, Nature, Love, on display at the Palazzo Reale in Milan from Nov. 30, 2019 to Feb. 23, 2020 presents, for the first time in Italy, the universe of the Maison of Fine Jewelry through more than 400 pieces of jewelry, watches and precious objects made since its founding in 1906. The exhibition celebrates the unique ability of jewelry to unite eternity and ephemerality, love and craftsmanship, beauty and art. The exhibition is divided into three sections(Time, Nature, Love) and was conceived with inspiration from Italo Calvino’s American Lessons.
Archival documents, line and gouache drawings testify to the origins of artistic creation by accompanying precious specimens from the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection and private loans. In perennial balance between the eternal and the ephemeral, between tradition and fashion, the art of jewelry has a complex relationship with time. The exhibition illustrates Van Cleef & Arpels’ ability to interpret a fragmented time such as the 20th century and to represent both the perpetual values associated with beauty and the fleeting power of seduction.
