From February 22 to August 2, 2020, the Armani/Silos space in Milan is hosting Heimat. A Sense of Belonging, an exhibition dedicated to Peter Lindbergh (Leszno, 1944 - Paris, 2019), which highlights the photographer’s unique gaze and unmistakable style, including through previously unseen works.
Personally curated by Giorgio Armani in collaboration with the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, the exhibition highlights the extraordinary affinities between Armani himself and Lindbergh, whose original sense of identity set very personal and very high standards, both in art and in life. Lindbergh’s demonstrated understanding of femininity, his interest in personality, and his penchant for truthfulness have always distinguished him from his colleagues. There is an inherent honesty in Lindbergh’s work that is closely linked to his own Heimat. The word Heimat, in German, means something more than home: it is a place of the heart, the place to which one belongs.
The exhibition unfolds as a movement in three sections. The photographer’s unique point of view, his idea of space and beauty, his unmistakable aesthetic, and his sources of inspiration are revealed in a journey that goes beyond the idea of fashion photography. It starts with the portraits of The Naked Truth, continues with the powerful atmospheres of Heimat (pictured), and concludes with the striking directness of the images of The Modern Heroine.
“Giorgio Armani and Peter Lindbergh,” reads the exhibition presentation, “shared values that permeated their entire aesthetic. In particular, an appreciation for truth and the soul that emanates from it, and the pursuit of honesty as opposed to artifice, gave rise to a close collaboration that began in the early 1980s and continued throughout their respective careers.”
