From September 25, 2020 to February 14, 2021, Palazzo Reale in Milan presents the retrospective Prima, donna. Margaret Bourke-White.

Palazzo Reale in Milan opens to the public on September 25, 2020 the exhibition Prima, donna. Margaret Bourke-White, curated by Alessandra Mauro. A retrospective exhibition dedicated to Margaret Bourke-White, among the most representative and emblematic figures of photojournalism, displaying her most extraordinary images in an unprecedented selection. In addition to the photographs, personal documents and images, videos and autobiographical texts will be presented to tell the story of the personality of an important photographer, a great woman, her vision and her life against the tide.

Bourke-White explored every aspect of photography, from early images devoted to the world of industry to major reportages for major newspapers such as Fortune and Life; from visual chronicles of World War II to portraits of Stalin and Gandhi, fromapartheid South Africa to America’s racial conflicts to aerial visions of the American continent.

The more than one hundred images on display in the exhibition come from the Life archive and are divided into eleven themes: The Enchantment of the Steel Mills, Dust Bowl, Life, Glimpses of Russia, On the Forgotten Front, In the Fields, India, South Africa, Voices of the White South, Up and Home, and My Mysterious Illness.

The exhibition is part of the schedule promoted by the Culture Department of the City of Milan entitled The Talents of Women, dedicated to the universe of women. The aim of the project is not only to produce new levels of awareness about the role of female figures in social life, but also to concretely help pursue the principle of equity and equal opportunity that must be able to be transferred into everyday representations and cultures.

The exhibition, which can be visited until Feb. 14, 2021, is produced by Comune di Milano|Cultura, Palazzo Reale and Contrasto, in collaboration with Life Picture Collection, with the contribution of Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia.
