Milan, Jan Fabre brings the wisdom of Belgium to Gaburro Gallery

From Dec. 2 to Feb. 12, 2023, Galleria Gaburro in Milan presents an exhibition by Jan Fabre, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio: 'The Wisdom of Belgium.' About thirty small-format works and a dozen sculptures never exhibited in Italy will be on display.

Gaburro Gallery is hosting the exhibition JAN FABRE. The Wisdom of Belgium, from Dec. 2, 2022 to Feb. 12, 2023, at the gallery’s headquarters in Via Cerva 25, Milan. The exhibition, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, is dedicated to Jan Fabre (Antwerp, 1958), one of the leading contemporary artists. On display are some 30 small-format works, from the series Folklore Sexuel Bel ge and Mer du Nord Sexuelle Belge, and a dozen sculptures, exhibited for the first time in Italy through which the artist questions Belgian identity, sexuality and sensuality, passed through the visual sifting of surrealism, a characteristic that distinguishes his work, as well as all Belgian art.

Jan Fabre, who in this case ironically calls himself "Le Bon Artiste Belge,“ offers a body of work aimed at searching for the Belgian national identity that is not unique, but dense with differences. In this fragmentary diversity it seeks to find wisdom and unity to propose what can ”connect rather than divide." The curator emphasizes how the iconography and iconology of Fabre’s drawings and sculptures in the exhibition seem to come out of the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, where marine elements such as shells, men, animals and plants undergo surreal and symbolic human-animal metamorphoses in an orgy of colors, forms and sexuality that Fabre wisely reinterprets also in the light of the transformations of popular cultures.

Jan Fabre (1958, Antwerp) is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, theater director, choreographer and set designer. He attended theMunicipal Institute of Decorative Arts and at theRoyal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and from there began his artistic research, declining it in different visual languages. He himself likes to call himself a “knight of despair and warrior of beauty” and a “consilience artist” because of his propensity to seek links between disciplines, to constantly experiment with materials and themes.
