Milan, Giorgio Griffa's indeterminable painting is on display

Galleria Il Milione in Milan opens, from February 6 to March 27, 2020, the exhibition Pittura indeterminabile, a solo show by Giorgio Griffa (Turin, 1936).

The exhibition displays works executed from 1974 to 2010 that interrogate “the indefinable complexity of matter” through the “anonymous sign that is only the trace of the brush.” These works, proposing a restitution of Griffa’s artistic journey, make the exhibition a moment of dialogue between the phases that characterize him: from the rigorous procedures of the 1970s to the more recent works in which squillanti cromie, matissiane forms and excerpts of narration of what Claudio Cerritelli defines in the text accompanying the exhibition as fabula picta chase each other.

The figure of the artist is understood by Griffa as a worker of painting: only execution can trigger critical and analytical inquiry and at the same time the cognitive dimension of the self through movement. Painting is for the artist part of the cognitive process of a complex world as it is contemporary. As Cerritelli writes, “Griffa understood from the beginning the impossibility of representing an ideal completed world, while it was possible ’the painting of a world that is realized as it is made’ therefore a painting that shows its making by pursuing step by step the sense of its freedom.” Griffa panders to the internal logic of the work, the intelligence of the material, deciding to relate to it reflectively and without imposition, resulting in a living and expanding painting. In this sense, the artist’s sign represents the generative energy of the image and the budding of the work’s possibility.
