From Sept. 17 to Oct. 2024, Russian artist Vladimir Kartashov (Novosibirsk, 1997) presents his eighth solo exhibition, entitled Spellbound, in Milan at Prometeo Gallery Ida Pisani. The exhibition aims to offer a profound exploration of the complex human existential condition in the digital age, combining a variety of visual universes ranging from realism to symbolism, from surrealism to existentialism.

Kartashov, influenced by different iconographic traditions, mythology and the dreamlike, has developed a personal style characterized by material and symbolic layers. His works reflect universal themes such as life, death, time and spirituality, exploring individual emotionality and the inaccessible dimension of the psyche. His pictorial work, suspended between realism and the fantastic, oscillates between introspection and wonder.

In Spellbound, Kartashov exhibits large-format canvases in which he creates voluptuous scenes populated by animals and fantastical characters with hidden faces. The backgrounds are enriched with plant and decorative elements, symbols, emoticons, hyperreal objects and written codes, creating a dense and complex final image that almost seems to overflow from the surface of the canvas.

“Vladimir Kartashov,” writes Domenico De Chirico in the critical text, “uses a variety of techniques and materials, ranging from traditional media such as painting and drawing to more innovative ones such as installations and digital media, so as to originate increasingly new and surprising experiments aimed at creating unique visual and conceptual effects. Corroborating such expressive pursuit are extraordinary compositions, oscillating between the tangible and the imaginative, sagelyly balanced and wittily thought out reflecting a certain attention to detail and overall visual harmony. Kartashov employs an opulent and vibrant color palette that allows him to generate bold contrasts through the juxtaposition of particularly radiant hues. In his practice, color, used expressively to detect themes and symbols, is irrefutably one of the essential tools for creating the resulting bewitching atmospheres and arousing oblique emotions. Pushing beyond his own boundaries, his vivid and textural painting - even applied in thick layers so as to add depth and a tactile sense to the work, even enhancing its physicality, creating a sculptural, layered and three-dimensional surface - contributes to the creation of a very personal yet profusely composite Weltanschauung, immediate and powerful, intense and engaging.”

The exhibition, produced in collaboration with Tg residency, invites the viewer to embark on a visual and emotional journey through the alternative and symbolic worlds of the young Russian artist.
