Milan Common Good: an exhibition on changes in the city's urban profile

From Oct. 12 to Nov. 3, 2022, Circolo Fotografico Milanese presents the exhibition 'Milano Bene Comune,' dedicated to changes in the city's urban profile in light of environmental and sustainability issues.

TheUN ’s 17 points for the 2020-2030 decade involve every level of society for a better and sustainable future. In this context, Milan is the Italian metropolis most affected by environmental issues, but also sustainability issues for the life and fabric of a highly productive society. Therefore, contemporary needs cannot avoid confronting the most pressing issues: use of resources, mobility systems and public transportation, production, distribution and trade models, lifestyle, and inclusion. It is from these reflections that the Circolo Fotografico Milanese, a historic institution founded in 1930 and one of the founders in the postwar period of FIAF, presents Milano Bene Comune, an exhibition that stems from the desire to bear witness, through a narrative of several voices, the changes in Milan’s urban profile and space, sustainable and circular activities, social activity, lifestyles and personal behavior, and the merits and demerits of civic action at all levels. The exhibition runs from October 12 to November 3, 2022.

Curated by Cristina Quadrio Curzio and realized thanks to the support of Sponsors SIF Italia, active in the management and administration of real estate complexes, and Power Point City Car, specializing in providing energy to apartment buildings and charging stations. With this project, the two companies intend to present themselves as promoters and supporters in the cultural and artistic fields with themes close to their corporate mission.

Milano Bene Comune is an articulated though not exhaustive look at today’s city and its citizens. There are nine thematic areas investigated by the Circle’s photographers: The Library of Milan, Milan in Color, Urban Jungle, Cascine, Tangenos, Distractions, Urban Mobility on Two Wheels, Historic Shops, and Historic Artisans.

“Milan,” says the curator, conveys its apparent linearity, order and momentum but hides profound contradictions made all the more surprising by that composed appearance that has always gone with the very idea of Milan: gray, rigorous with its inhabitants walking briskly with their hats dropped on their heads and their eyes on the tips of their shoes. Contradictions were, until a few years ago, the exclusive preserve of surprising cities like Rome, Naples and Palermo but certainly not of this sober and composed Lady lying on the damp Po Valley. It is to be astonished."

With this exhibition, the Circolo Fotografico Milanese further strengthens its ties with the city of Milan and offers citizens the opportunity to view never-before-seen images in the Circolo’s own style that has distinguished its work to date. The exhibition includes a video made by Lorenzo De Francesco embellished with images of the Circolo Fotografico Milanese’s historical members and a limited edition catalog available at the Milan Cultural Center bookshop.

The exhibition is part of the circuit of the 17th edition of Photofestival, the important art photography festival spread across the Milan metropolitan area and some of the Lombard provinces (Sept. 14-Oct. 31, 2022).

The exhibition enjoys the patronage of the City of Milan and the recognition of FIAF (Federazione Italiana Associazioni Fotografiche).
