After an absence of more than 10 years, Andy Warhol returns to Milan told in an exhibition with more than 300 works, until March 26: the exhibition dedicated to the genius of Pop Art, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and the collaboration of Edoardo Falcioni, aims in fact to reconstruct all the historical periods in which the artist, through his revolution, was able to innovate the history of art of the twentieth century, trying his hand in different areas such as fashion, music and entrepreneurship.
With more than three hundred works divided into seven thematic areas and thirteen sections, from his beginnings in the 1950s as a commercial illustrator to his last decade of activity in the 1980s marked by his relationship with the sacred, the exhibition Andy Warhol. The Publicity of Form is promoted and produced by Comune di Milano-Cultura and Navigare, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva with Edoardo Falcioni for Art Motors, Partner BMW. Open from October 22, 2022 until March 26, 2023 in Milan at the Fabbrica del Vapore, it is a journey into the artistic and human universe of one of the artists who most innovated the history of world art.
“Warhol,” says Bonito Oliva, “is the Raphael of American mass society who gives surface to every depth of the image thus making it immediately usable, ready for consumption like any product that crowds our daily lives. In this way he develops an unprecedented classicism in his aesthetic transformation. Thus the publicity of the form creates the epiphany, that is, the appearance, of the image.” The Milan exhibition aims to document Warhol’s compelling journey: from the symbolic objects of mass consumerism, to the portraits of the star system of the 1960s; from the Ladies & Gentlemen series of the 1970s dedicated to drag queens, the transvestites, a symbol of marginalization par excellence and considered on a par with stars such as Marilyn, to the 1980s in which his relationship with the sacred becomes predominant: a practicing Catholic, he had actually been pervaded by it all his life.
Within the exhibition will be original paintings, one-of-a-kind works, historical silkscreens, drawings, polaroids, photographs and other real memorabilia such as original covers drawn and autographed by Warhol. The exhibition will span from the 1950s, which established him above all as a fine and highly respected draftsman, to the 1960s, one of the artist’s most prolific periods, which would become a true “social commentator,” portraying icons (such as the legendary Campbell’s Soup), fame(Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe) and disasters (from Jackie Kennedy ’s faces scarred for her husband’s funeral to a Car Crash of the ’70s); from the 1970s, in which he will instead become The society artist (great attention will be paid to the dualism of the sociological analysis of Warhol’s work) to the 1980s, in which the artist, presenting himself to the general public as the spiritual father of a new generation of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, will realize new symbolism, experimentation and homages to the past.
