From April 11 to June 30, 2024, the Phillips exhibition space in Milan presents the exhibition Louise Nevelson. Beyond the Surface, which celebrates the legacy of American sculptor Louise Nevelson (Kiev, 1899 - New York, 1988), a pioneering figure and one of the most influential American sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson created her distinctive assembled artworks in monochromatic wood, collage and sculpture using found materials, including wood scraps such as disassembled chairs and table legs salvaged from the streets of New York City. Nevelson’s work has been acquired by prestigious international institutions, including the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The exhibition includes 15 significant works made by the artist between the 1960s and 1980s, including her iconic and distinctive monumental black assemblages. Louise Nevelson first visited Italy in the 1930s, initiating a lasting bond with the country and a special relationship with Milan, where she exhibited for the first time in 1973. The exhibition commemorates 51 years since Nevelson’s inaugural exhibition in Milan and notably follows two years after a significant tribute to the artist at the Venice Biennale 2022: Cecilia Alemani ’s inclusion of one of her iconic monoliths in The Milk of Dreams and Louise Nevelson. Persistence, an exhibition dedicated to the artist.
