On the occasion of the ongoing celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, from October 8 to November 17, 2019 with free admission, through the claim The Last Supper, timeless inspiration, Palazzo Reale intends to narrate with two important works five hundred years apart, a tapestry and a film, the fascination that Leonardo’s masterpiece has had and continues to have on the work and creativity of artists.
Set up in the prestigious Sala delle Cariatidi, as part of the Milano Leonardo 500 program schedule, is an extraordinary, little-known work of great importance for the dissemination of Leonardo’s art: the tapestry from the Vatican Museums reproducing Leonardo’sLast Supper (pictured) commissioned, as the coats of arms in it prove, by Francis I, King of France, and his mother, Louise of Savoy. Housed in the Vatican Museums, it was probably woven in Flanders from cartoons by a Lombard artist and, with a few other copies from the early 16th century, played an important role in spreading knowledge of Leonardo’s art in France.
The exhibition also offers a comparison with an evocative nine-minute tableau vivant L’Ultima Cena: Tableau Vivant, premiered forItaly, created and filmed with meticulous and excellent quality in detail by Armondo Linus Acosta, with Academy Award winners Vittorio Storaro, Dante Ferretti and with Francesca Lo Schiavo. On the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci’s death, it is therefore significant that these legendary film artists have come together to recreate, in a true tour de force, the grandeur and spirit of the original painting. In honor of Leonardo’s masterpiece they have created a work of exquisite beauty to be exhibited in museums, churches, galleries and squares around the world with an installation so breathtakingly beautiful.
