Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru is an exhibition that, from Oct. 8, 2022 to Feb. 19, 2023 at Mudec in Milan, through multi-millennial artifacts, videos, immersive 3D reconstructions and an image-based set-up that renders the idea of a true journey through time, will ferry the public back through the millennia, telling the story of a civilization that is as glorious as it is ancient and remote and of which only the last piece is often known, the most recent and universally made famous by the discovery of the remains of the great sacred city of Machu Picchu.
The project, curated by Ulla Holmquist director of the LARCO Museum in Lima and archaeologist Carole Fraresso, traverses Andean artistic history and biodiversity throughout its broad geographic dimension and chronological depth, culminating in an ideal journey to the Inca city of Machu Picchu.
The exhibition presents a selection of more than 180 artifacts of astonishing beauty: terracotta works of great expressiveness and technical perfection, as well as golds, silvers and textiles. Part of the itinerary is dedicated to the adventurous journey alongside the mythical hero of the Moche Culture Ai Apaec through which the public will discover the mysteries of Andean cosmology, moving crosswise through the three planes of the universe: the above, the here and the below.
The narration of a story within History, a storytelling that unfolds through immersive videos, 3D reconstructions of environments and biodiversity, and above all artifacts, which before being archaeological finds were jewelry, textiles and garments worn by men and women who lived fully in their world and society, made up of laws and customs, knowledge and rituals, symbols and traditions, myths and legends.
Finally, the exhibition offers the opportunity to experience - through an immersive room separate from the exhibition route - a real flight simulation over the sacred city of Machu Picchu that will stimulate the senses of sight, hearing and the sense of movement through an integrated visual and sound VR motion virtual reality station. One will be able to experience the real, ’physical’ sensation of flying over the remains of the UNESCO World Heritage Monument and over the sacred mountains and the Amazon rainforest, in the company of a virtual guide who will ’fly’ with us telling the story of this magical site, taking us on a real emotional journey.
