Masterpiece for Milan 2023 will be the compartment of theArmadio degli Argenti by Beato Angelico (Vicchio di Mugello, c. 1395 - Rome, 1455) dedicated to the Stories of the Infancy of Christ, from theAnnunciation to the Dispute among the Doctors, introduced by the Vision of Ezekiel, from the Museo di San Marco in Florence. In fact, the masterpiece will be on display from October 28, 2023 to January 28, 2024 at the Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini in Milan. It is one of the doors of the Armadio degli Argenti, so called because the thirty-six compartments that composed it were originally the outer doors of the wooden cabinet that held votive offerings destined for the miraculous image of the Virgin in the Florentine church of Santissima Annunziata, still among the most venerated in Florence.
The panel was commissioned in 1448 by Piero Cosimo de’ Medici and was painted between 1450 and 1452 by Fra Giovanni da Fiesole, better known as Beato Angelico, at the height of his career.
The work presents a very rich narrative sequence: a true illustrated Bible in which all episodes are framed, at the top, by a cartouche with an Old Testament prophecy and, at the bottom, by the corresponding Gospel quotation. The delicate Annunciation, one of the painter’s favorite themes, the intimate and intense Nativity, with an extraordinary effect of artificial light, and the Circumcision, set in a temple that also reveals the painter’s updating on the architectural innovations of the time, stand out.
The exhibition is curated by Angelo Tartuferi, director of the Museo di San Marco in Florence, and Nadia Righi, director of the Museo Diocesano in Milan, and is supported by Fondazione Bracco, the main sponsor.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition, the Diocesan Museum will organize educational proposals aimed at adults and school students, as well as side events, such as workshops, lectures, meetings, and concerts.
