Milan, 40 works by Richard Serra on display at Cardi Gallery

From March 30 to August 5, 2022, Cardi Gallery in Milan is hosting "40 Balls," a solo exhibition of Richard Serra's 40 new works by the American artist for the first time.

From March 30 to Aug. 5, 2022, Cardi Gallery in Milan is hosting the exhibition 40 Balls by Richard Serra (San Francisco, 1939), one of the leading artists of his generation, a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2001, known for installing the gigantic steel sculptures for which he is internationally recognized in architectural, urban and landscape contexts around the world: from London to Berlin, Naples to Bilbao, his works have populated public spaces and museums for more than five decades, establishing a direct relationship with the viewer.

Cardi Gallery’s exhibition presents, for the first time, forty new drawings, all one-of-a-kind pieces, created by the American artist especially for the occasion, in an installation he designed himself. Alongside his impressive site-specific sculptures, over the course of his long career Richard Serra has steadily deepened his practice of drawing, producing works that, because of their ability to investigate reality and construct the graphic sign, are as immediate and absolute as his sculptures.

For his drawings the artist has been using, since 1971, a stick of black paint (compressed oil paint, wax and pigment) working intuitively: although these works are an integral part of that study of the key themes of time, materiality and process, characteristic of his sculptural practice, they should not be considered sketches or studies for sculpture. Richard Serra’s drawings are works in their own right, each with a singular character and energy, resistant to any metaphorical or emotional association, all unique pieces.
