Pictor Optimus is the exhibition that Merano’s Castello Principesco dedicates to Giorgio De Chirico, open to the public from December 4, 2019 to January 5, 2020.
Curated by Azzurra Casiraghi and Brasilia Pellegrinelli and organized by Art Action in collaboration with the Palais Mamming Museum and the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Merano, the exhibition presents about twenty engravings, lithographs and etchings by the artist, chosen from the different periods of his production.
The exhibition aims to illustrate the themes dearest to De Chirico and the strong influences that German culture had on him: in Metaphysical Painting Arnold Böcklin and Max Klinger were fundamental on a pictorial level, while from a philosophical point of view Schopenhauer and Nietzsche were fundamental.
All the works on display bear the title written by the author and the Casa De Chirico embossing stamp: lithographs, etchings and engravings colored by hand or in black and white, collected over forty-five years of research in Italy and abroad, many of them extremely rare. Among the works on display are Enigma of the Afternoon, Horse with Mantle, The Troubled Muses, The Awakening of the Troubadour, Italian Square with Ephebus, Metaphysical Interior, Self-Portrait in Costume, Hector and Andromache.
Desolate Italian Piazzas illuminated by a pale autumn sun, mysterious characters inspired by Greek mythology and enigmatic statues; autobiographical memories and classical studies succeed apocalyptic scenes, horses and zebras running together, sea monsters and mysterious cabins emerging from still waters.
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays and holidays 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Closed Mondays.
