MAXXI pays tribute to scholar and collector Claudia Gian Ferrari with an exhibition

Entitled "Homage to Claudia Gian Ferrari," the exhibition with which MAXXI in Rome pays tribute to the great scholar and collector, an important figure for the Roman museum.

“One always collects one’s own self,” wrote Jean Baudrillard, and a collection is therefore, also the personal story of the person who creates it little by little: and it is to trace the personal story of a great collector, as well as scholar and gallery owner, namely Claudia Gian Ferrari (Milan, 1945 - 2010), that MAXXI is mounting an exhibition dedicated to her on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of her death. It is Homage to Claudia Gian Ferrari, originally scheduled for spring and then, due to the pandemic, moved to October: it is being held at MAXXI from October 2 to November 1, 2020.

Claudia Gian Ferrari’s bequest to the Museum reveals some constants in the dynamics and choices of her collection constituted through her incessant relationship with artists, collectors, gallerists and connaisseurs, with that system of contemporary art that has developed in Italy since the 1990s.

His home in Rome, which overlooks the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, was filled with works, objects, sculptures and videos, many of which are on display on this occasion, that tell, in addition to his passion and commitment, a fragment of our art history. With the intention of promoting and disseminating the art she loved most to make it accessible to a wide audience, Claudia Gian Ferrari engaged in the last years of her life, in important donations aimed at enriching the heritage of several public collections, including, the one destined for MAXXI in 2010 and consisting of 58 of the contemporary art works from her collection in the Roman house. A gesture of great generosity and trust toward an institution that was then taking its first steps.
