The exhibition of Mario Cresci (Chiavari, 1942) entitled An Exorcism of Time, hosted by MAXXI and curated by Marco Scotini with Simona Antonacci, is on view until Oct. 1. More than 350 vintage works recount the photographer’s research during his 20 years of activity in Basilicata, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s.
In this historical and geographical context Mario Cresci developed a personal anthropological approach “in the field,” actively contributing to the social, urban and cultural changes taking place in the region in those years. In the works on display, the interiors of dwellings, people, urban spaces, architectural elements and objects of Lucanian tradition manifest themselves to evoke a collective symbolic horizon at once archaic and contemporary.
Recurrent themes in the photographic research of many authors, such as presence and absence, perception of time, interpretation of reality, appear in Cresci’s works in a new key.
