Matthias Herrmann's works on display in Mantua, at Palazzo Ducale

Matthias Herrmann. Aemulatio and Emulsion is the title of the new exhibition at the Ducal Palace in Mantua planned along the traditional route of Corte Vecchia. The concept of the exhibition, curated by Peter Assmann, includes eight “islands” in which the works of Matthias Herrmann (Munich, 1963) establish a dialogue with the environments and works of the Gonzaga palace. The German artist’s visual work speaks of narratives, the stories behind, in and around an image. Herrmann takes a personal approach to the theme of imagination, that capacity of human culture to produce images that remain and open toward a future, in the discussion of common human experiences.

The exhibition stems from research work done on the Ducal Palace in Mantua and the history of the Gonzaga family. Herrmann’s artistic sensibility acquires, captures, meditates and repurposes fragments identified in the tour of the Palace. New emphases and focuses are thus proposed through the photographic works; visions and studies that complement the artist’s historicized expressive research, aimed at considering the human figure as the protagonist of a narrative. The narrative dimension touches both the museum reality and the urban environment, in continuous cross-reference between inside and outside of the place and of the artist himself. Herrmann’s photographic works draw the viewer’s attention to details that suggest new interpretations of the source artistic subject, thus conferring an added value that stimulates interest and enriches the viewer’s perceptive faculty.
