Masterpieces of the 20th Century Avant-Garde from the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Pisa this fall

Palazzo Blu in Pisa will welcome masterpieces of the Twentieth Century Avant-Garde from the Philadelphia Museum of Art for its fall exhibition.

From Sept. 28, 2023 to April 7, 2024, Palazzo Blu in Pisa will welcome masterpieces of the 20th-century Avant-Garde, including paintings and sculptures, from the Philadelphia Museum of Art in its fall exhibition. Curated by Matthew Affron, curator of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with scientific advice for the Pisa presentation from art historian Stefano Zuffi, the exhibition Le Avanguardie. Masterpieces from the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be an opportunity to admire works of European art from the early decades of the 20th century. Masterpieces by Chagall, Dali, Duchamp, Kandinsky, Miró and Picasso will arrive in the rooms of Palazzo Blu. Also, works by Matisse, Mondrian, Klee, Ernst and Gris, artists who have never before been exhibited in the Pisan exhibition venue.

The exhibition will retrace some of the highlights of the “short century.” Opening the exhibition will be a Self-Portrait by 25-year-old Picasso. The young painter harnesses his palette and, literally, rolls up his sleeves: it is the first, conscious step toward becoming the great protagonist of the artistic story of an entire century. The journey will continue as an intense “time line” in which the works will be accompanied by visual, sound and multimedia installations in order to place them in the sequence of historical and cultural events from the end of the “Belle Époque” to the outbreak of World War II.

The exhibition will conclude with the Crucifixion painted by Chagall in 1940, a work of very strong suggestion and high symbolic value.

The opening of the exhibition, produced and organized by Fondazione Palazzo Blu and MondoMostre, with the contribution of Fondazione Pisa, also coincides with the conclusion of a redevelopment and renovation of the spaces at Palazzo Blu, an intervention that involved the lighting and systems of the historic building overlooking the Arno River.
