Masterpieces from Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery on display at Vatican Museums

From Nov. 20, 2018 to Feb. 16, 2019, the Vatican Museums are hosting masterpieces of Russian figurative art from the Tretyakov National Gallery in Moscow.

Opening in the Arm of Charlemagne of the Vatican Museums is the exhibition"Pilgrimage of Russian Art. From Dionysius to Malevich" open from November 20, 2018 to February 16, 2019.

The exhibition presented by the Vatican Museums, the Tretyakov National Gallery and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation displays 54 masterpieces from the Tretyakov Gallery and other Russian museums: many of these works have never left their locations.

The intent is to communicate the cultural and spiritual message of Russian art at the heart of the Western Christian world through works ranging from the 15th to the 19th century: including Alexander Ivanov’s"The Apparition of Christ to the People," PaisiusTrinity, Ivan Kramsky’s"Inconsolable Sorrow," Nikolay Yaroshenko’s "Life is Everywhere," Simon Ushakov’s"Madonna of Kykkos," and Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square. Also, from the Tretyakov Gallery"Before the Confession" by Ilya Repin,"Moscow. Red Square" by Kandinsky and Vasily Perov’s"Portrait of F.M.Dostoevsky."

Vatican Museums director Barbara Jatta said, “Beauty builds bridges, brings different cultures together and makes everyone brothers. Art is beauty, in all its forms and declinations, and it fulfills its extraordinary function in ways that are always surprising. The happy artistic collaboration between the Vatican and Russia, which has already seen the creation of the ”Roma Aeterna“ exhibition, continues today with the realization of an exchange, a bridge in fact, that allows the many visitors to the Vatican and beyond to admire great Russian painting from over six centuries.”

The exhibition, curated by Arkadi Ippolitov, Tatyana Samoilova and Tatyana Udenkova, is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation and Alisher Usmanov’s Art, Science and Sport Foundation, which works with projects that carry out a responsible mission in bringing together cultures of different nations.
