Massimo Stecchi ’s horses are the protagonists of the new exhibition scheduled at the Cesare Olmastroni Gallery of Palazzo Patrizi in Siena for the ArteSiena show, which, from October 11 to 29, 2018, hosts Un Viaggio A/R, Massimo Stecchi’s first major solo exhibition.
The exhibition will showcase some phases of the “mature” production of the Sienese artist, a pictorial activity that began as a self-taught artist, out of pure passion, and has now become a full-time commitment. In the exhibition Stecchi travels with his mind, only to return punctually, however, to the “base,” to his beloved Siena, to his tranquilizing lands, to that small portion of the ancient world. Critic Duccio Benocci writes in the presentation of the exhibition’s catalog, “And here is explained the presence in a conspicuous group of works of the horse to which Massimo Stecchi devotes himself with originality, representing one of the most frequented (and therefore least original) subjects in the history of universal art, from cave paintings to the present day: he paints a ’something’ that everyone is able to recognize, from a first glance.”
But there are not only horses in Massimo Stecchi’s production: in fact, the artist also draws heavily on the Sienese figurative tradition(Duccio di Buoninsegna in primis) for the creation of a series of women, madonnas, children and men. A final series of works, finally, depicts the vicissitudes of migrants, stories of ordinary desperation, stories of people fleeing their native countries in search of fortune, but who too often find death on the journey. The exhibition, which opened Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m., can be visited free of charge every day from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
