MASI in Lugano showcases masterpieces from the Gottfried Keller Foundation: works by Hodler, Segantini, Giacometti and many others


From March 24 to July 28, 2019, MASI in Lugano is hosting the exhibition Hodler - Segantini - Giacometti. Masterpieces from the Gottfried Keller Foundation.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Escher and Gottfried Keller, the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana (MASI) in Lugano is offering the exhibition Hodler - Segantini - Giacometti. Masterpieces from the Gottfried Keller Foundation, which will be on view from March 24 to July 28, 2019.

The exhibition, in collaboration with the National Museum Zurich and theFederal Office of Culture, will bring together for the first time in fifty years some of the Gottfries Keller Foundation’s most significant masterpieces, including Giovanni Segantini ’s famous Triptych of Nature, which will leave its original home in St.Moritz for the second time in a hundred years to participate in the exhibition.
Visitors will be able to retrace the main stages of Swiss art history of the past two centuries through the works on display.



Among the artists on display are Giovanni Serodine, Jean-Etienne Liotar, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Arnold Böcklin, Rudolf Keller, Otto Frölicher, Ferdinand Hodler, Giovanni Segantini, Félix Vallotton, Giovanni Giacometti, Cuno Amiet, Alice Bailly, Adolf Dietrich, and Alberto Giacometti.

The Gottfried Keller Foundation was established in 1890 by Lydia Welti-Escher, daughter of Alfred Escher, an industrial pioneer and railroad entrepreneur. Much of her estate was donated to the Swiss Confederation. The Foundation was significant in preventing the sale of cultural property abroad and bringing important works back to Switzerland, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of Swiss cultural heritage. Today, the collection of the Gottfried Keller Foundation consists of more than 6400 works and is considered one of the most important collections of Swiss art from the 12th to the 20th century.
