MASI in Lugano dedicates an exhibition to the Shunk-Kender photography duo

MASI in Lugano presents from March 1 to June 14, 2020 the exhibition Shunk-Kender. Art through the Lens (1957-1983), curated by Julie Jones, Chloé Goualc’h, Stéphanie Rivoire.

An exhibition devoted to German photographer Harry Shunk and Hungarian photographer János Kender, who from the 1950s began a lasting and fruitful collaboration. The two documented openings, biennials, artists at work in their studios or in public performances especially in Paris and New York, thus documenting the world of avant-garde art and its most significant exponents: among them, Andy Wahrol, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely.

On view in the exhibition will be 450 original photographs and documents, selected from the more than 10,000 donated by the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation in 2014 and stored at the Kandinsky Library in Paris. Divided into sections, such as Intimacy, The Body in Action, and New Spaces, the photographs take visitors through the late 1950s and early 1970s, a period when artists were primarily interested in experimentation, sexual and artistic liberation, and were continually looking for alternative spaces where they could create and disseminate their works.

In keeping with the period, Shunk and Kender also stepped out of their photographic studios to be present in the places immortalized in their shots and often had a direct relationship with their subjects.

The exhibition is conceived and produced by the Centre Pompidou in Paris in collaboration with the Swiss Italian Museum of Art.
