Mart restarts with a large solo exhibition of Carlo Benvenuto, artist of the metaphysics of the everyday

The Mart resumes its exhibition season with the exhibition Carlo Benvenuto. The Original. He is the author of a refined metaphysics of the everyday.

The exhibition season at the Mart in Rovereto restarts with the exhibition Carlo Benvenuto. The Original, which can be visited from June 27 to October 18, 2020.

Curated by Gianfranco Maraniello with Daniela Ferrari and Chiara Ianeselli and conceived by Vittorio Sgarbi, the extensive exhibition is dedicated to one of the greatest artists to emerge at the beginning of the Millennium, Carlo Benvenuto (Stresa, 1966). In more than two decades of activity, photography has led the artist to a phenomenological investigation of the world as a perceptive and sentimental verification of life. With his art he achieves a refined metaphysics of the everyday: a universe of objects, furniture and mirrors that have no title and do not describe. Benvenuto contemplates what appears familiar, domestic and intimate and resolves long preparatory stages of the works with the immediacy of the photographic shot. His fidelity to the original, dictated by the 1:1 scale ratio and the use of the view camera, is not intended to signify a documentary or realistic image.

His works, sixty in the exhibition including photographs, sculptures and paintings, will be placed in dialogue with three masterpieces by Giorgio De Chirico, Giorgio Morandi and Renato Guttuso belonging to the Mart’s collections.

The exhibition “ideally orbits around a center in which four forms of self-portraiture find their home,” said the artist. The theme of the double is constantly affirmed through reflections, pairings, dialogues, repetitions and variations, up to a pictorial self-portrait that Benvenuto conceived as solitary, unique in peering into the void.

Carlo Benvenuto’s solo show is the first major exhibition event proposed by the Mart after its forced closure. The project composes a key piece in the museum’s most recent programming, which offers visitors an itinerary on the theme of the image in the autonomous but contemporary exhibitions devoted to the history of photography conceived with Italo Zannier, the film medium adopted by filmmakers Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi, and the in-depth look at pictorialism in the museum’s photographic collections proposed by the After Monet focus.
