Markku Piri, a glass artist at the MUVE in Murano

Until Jan. 7 at the Museum of Glass (MUVE) in Murano you can visit the exhibition of Markku Piri, a Finnish artist and designer.

The MUVE (Museum of Glass) in Murano(Venice) is hosting, from October 7, 2017 to January 7, 2018, the exhibition Markku Piri. Glass & Paintings. A Finn in the glass paradise of Murano, a solo show by Markku Piri (1955), one of the most appreciated contemporary Finnish artists and designers, at ease with painting but also with glass: to Murano he brings his latest research, inspired by the very places where the exhibition is held (in fact, the eclectic artist has been working for years together with Murano glassmakers). The exhibition is the latest stop on a tour that has also taken Markku Piri’s creations to Florence (Palazzo Medici Riccardi) and Rome (Museo Carlo Bilotti).

In the exhibition, set up in the Brandolini Room of the MUVE, one can admire small sculptures but also large installations, fabrics, silkscreens and paintings, for a total of about ninety works of art. “In his work,” we read in the presentation, “Piri tends to achieve perfect aesthetic harmony by designing and making his glassware with the utmost attention to the smallest details, with the intention of enhancing the aesthetic potential of the adopted material. Thus are born artistic glass creations composed of unique objects and small series of sculptures made together with the renowned Murano masters Pino Signoretto, Gambaro &Tagliapietra, Simone Cenedese and Gianni Seguso, but also with the glassblowers of the Finnish cooperative Lasismi.” The aim of the exhibition is also “to create a dialogue between three-dimensional glass sculptures and two-dimensional works of art, as in the case of the serigraphs from the Shadow Dances series that dialogue with the glass vases from the Raggi di Sole collection made in Murano by master Simone Cenedese; the same goes for the paintings and textiles, in a relationship involving architecture, nature and space, in an elaborate play of colors and reflections.”

The exhibition, curated by Ritva Röminger-Czako, sponsored by the Embassy of Finland in Rome in collaboration with the Honorary Consulate of Finland in Venice, includes references to both Murano and Finnish traditions: in fact, Finland has a long tradition of glassmaking. The exhibition can be visited during museum opening hours, that is, until October 31 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from November 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last admission one hour before closing.
