Mario Merz's celebrated igloos in a major retrospective in Milan

From October 25, 2018 to February 24, 2019, Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan will host 'Igloos,' an exhibition dedicated to Mario Merz's celebrated igloos.

Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan will mount the exhibition "Igloos," an exhibition project dedicated to Mario Merz ( Milan, 1925 - 2003). From Oct. 25, 2018 to Feb. 24, 2019, the large hall will host igloos, the famous works of one of the most relevant artists of the post-World War II period, dated between 1968 and the year of his death.

The exhibition, which finds space in the 5,500 square meters of the Naves and Cube of Pirelli HangarBicocca, places the visitor at the center of a constellation of more than thirty large-scale works in the shape of igloos, an unprecedented landscape with a strong visual impact.

Fifty years after the creation of the first igloo, the exhibition offers an opportunity to view works by Mario Merz of historical importance and innovative scope, from numerous international private and museum collections-including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Tate Modern in London, theHamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven-collected and exhibited together for the first time in Italy.

Curating the event is Vicente Todolí, who explains, "The exhibition ’Igloos’ takes as its starting point Mario Merz’s solo exhibition curated by Harald Szeemann in 1985 at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, where all the types of igloos made up to that time were presented “in order to form a village, a country, an ’Unreal City’ in the exhibition space,” as Szeemann puts it."

The exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Merz Foundation.
