Marina Abramović takes center stage in an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London: from September 23, 2023 to January 1, 2024, the pioneering performance artist, who has captivated audiences by pushing the limits of her body and mind over the past half-century, is featured in an exhibition at Burlington House that will trace some of the pivotal moments in her career.
Marina Abramović has gained worldwide acclaim as a performance artist. She has constantly tested the limits of her physical and mental endurance in her work, subjecting herself to exhaustion, pain and even the possibility of death. In her early work Rhythm 0, Abramović invited the audience to freely interact with her as they preferred, even to the point where a loaded gun was held to her head. Again, the work The House with the Ocean View saw the artist living in a house built in a gallery for 12 days. Held in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York, the show invited the audience to witness and share the simple act of living.
The London exhibition presents key moments in Abramović’s career through mediums such as sculpture, video, installation and performance. Works such as The Artist is Present will be re-enacted through archival footage, while others will be re-enacted by the next generation of performance artists, trained in Marina Abramović’s method. The art of live performance can be both surprising and intimate. For Abramović, it also has the power to transform. Audiences will be able to experience this firsthand by reliving performances of Imponderabilia, Nude with Skeleton, Luminosity and The House with the Ocean View.
Different works will be re-enacted during the course of the exhibition, so no two visits will be the same. For all information you can visit the Royal Academy of Arts website.
