Man Ray, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, will be the protagonist from April 8 to October 7, 2018 of the exhibition"Man Ray. Wonderful visions" at the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art “Raffaele de Grada” in San Gimignano.
On display are more than one hundred photographs in chronological order in order to allow visitors to discover the significant milestones and most famous works of the famous photographer-artist who turns everything into"wonderful visions."
“I have tried to capture the visions that twilight or too bright light, or their fleetingness, or the slowness of our ocular apparatus take away from our senses. I was always amazed, often enchanted, sometimes literally ’ravished,’” Man Ray himself wrote.
The curator of the exhibition, Elio Grazioli, said, “Affection is what creates mystery, it is the secret feeling that remains enigmatic beyond symbolic unveiling, it is an extra private dimension with which the object, including photography, and the gaze, which becomes ’enchanted,’ are charged.” Man Ray turns every image into an enigma that indicates how in the real, even the most habitual, a mystery is hidden. Everything becomes strange, unusual, unexpected and is charged with an unforeseen meaning, a meaning that cannot be traced back to a formula, a message, but is suspended, alienating, that preserves its enigmaticity. Even a dress, a hat, an accessory becomes a question mark on the body, the face, the arm on which it is laid."
“Man Ray. Wonderful visions” is promoted by the San Gimignano Civic Museums and produced by Opera-Civita with the collaboration of the Marconi Foundation.
