MAN in Nuoro dedicates a major anthological exhibition to Lisetta Carmi with unpublished

Opening December 4, 2020 at the MAN Museum of Art in Nuoro is a major anthological exhibition dedicated to one of the most significant post-World War II photographers, Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924).

Cheerful Voices in the Dark. Photographs in Sardinia 1962-1976, this is the title of the exhibition, is curated by Luigi Fassu and Giovanni Battista Martini and is part of the research conducted by MAN on the relationship between great Italian photographers and Sardinia.

Open to the public until March 7, 2021, the anthological exhibition presents an unpublished chapter of Lisetta Carmi’s photography, namely the one dedicated to Sardinia, through hundreds of black and white shots taken between 1962 and 1976, during repeated stays in that land. Also on display is an unpublished series of color slides depicting landscapes of the Sardinian hinterland, characterized by forests, rivers and lakes, captured in their evocative dimension.

Two sections of the exhibition are devoted to the series of I Travestiti (1965-1971) and the workers in the port of Genoa (1964): the former is the result of years of frequenting the community of transvestites in Genoa, relegated to the margins of society, sharing with empathy a daily life that contrasts social marginalization with moments of communal living; the latter grew out of a 1964 photo report on the workers of the port of Genoa, made with the intention of denouncing the extremely harsh working conditions.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive monographic catalog published by Marsilio and accompanied by critical essays by Etienne Bernard, Nicoletta Leonardi, Giovanni Battista Martini and Luigi Fassi.
