Extended until September 30 is the major exhibition The Good Century of Sienese Painting. From the Modern Manner to Caravaggesque Enlightenment, which opened on March 18 in three different venues(Montepulciano, San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza) and was supposed to close on June 30: another three months, therefore, to visit the “tripartite” exhibition that has already been a great success with the public and great interest from the media. The exhibition includes three sections: the first, dedicated to DomenicoBeccafumi (Domenico Beccafumi. The artist as a young man, curated by Alessandro Angelini and Roberto Longi), takes place at the Museo Civico - Pinacoteca Crociani in Montepulciano. The second, Dal Sodoma al Riccio: la pittura senese negli ultimi decenni della Repubblica (curated by Gabriele Fattorini and Laura Martini) is being held in San Quirico d’Orcia at Palazzo Chigi Zondadari, and finally the third, Francesco Rustici detto il Rustichino, caravaggesco gentile e il naturalismo a Siena (curated by Marco Ciampolini and Roggero Roggeri), can be visited at the Conservatorio San Carlo Borromeo in Pienza.
Of a bet won speak the mayors of the three Sienese municipalities where the exhibition is being held. “The formula that has been chosen,” the statement reads, “has shown to work perfectly: each of the three venues has proposed a section of a rich itinerary on the ’500 and ’600 Sienese, starting from a work that was already there originally and from which an in-depth study of the individual artist has unraveled, making each section a monographic exhibition in other ways. The extension of the exhibition also originated from the real requests received from the public, agencies and tour operators, who emphasized how the event generated a more than positive effect on local tourism; sales of the catalog, published by Pacini editore, were also excellent, much appreciated by visitors and specialists, also in view of the new research perspectives proposed by the curators. Finally, during the school months, there was considerable awareness among schools, children and families thanks to the educational interventions carried out by the Elicona Servizi Culturali cooperative.” A study day on Sienese naturalist painting, scheduled for September, will also be held in Pienza on the sidelines of the exhibition.
The exhibition, coordinated by the Fondazione Musei Senesi and Vernice Progetti Culturali, can be visited Monday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a closing day on Tuesday. Costs (ticket valid for the three venues): full 12 euros, reduced for groups of at least 15 people, children under 18, convention holders, university students, residents in the province of Siena, ICOM members and FAI members 6 euros.
