Filippo Palizzi (Vasto, 1818 - Naples, 1899) was one of the greatest interpreters of 19th-century Italian realism, as well as one of the leading southern Italian artists of the second half of the 19th century. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth, his hometown, Vasto, is dedicating an important monographic exhibition to him: it is Dopo il Diluvio. Filippo Palizzi, Nature and the Arts scheduled at the Civic Museums of Palazzo D’Avalos in Vasto from June 16 (Filippo Palizzi’s birthday) to September 30, 2018. The exhibition showcases two hundred works, of which one hundred and fifty are on loan, including from major museums such as the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples, the Museo di San Martino in Naples, and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, to trace the great artist’s long career, from 1830 to 1899: from his debut in Vasto to his training in Naples, from his travels in Moldavia and Northern Europe to his dialogue with Paris, from his stays in Cava de’ Tirreni to his activity at the Museo Artistico Industriale in Naples.
Curated by Lucia Arbace, the exhibition takes its title from the painting After the Flood, the centerpiece of the exhibition (although it will only be on display from September), since fifteen preparatory sketches and a reproduction in an engraving by Saro Cucinotta are on display, and there will also be an opportunity to delve into the painting’s contents through a touch screen created for the occasion. In addition, said the curator, “the title of the exhibition is meant to take on a well-wishing value for Abruzzo and our whole society since Filippo Palizzi intended the exit of the animals from the ark as the moment of rebirth after the geological catastrophe. The animals are represented without any more instincts, projected toward love.”
The bicentennial exhibition intends to present selections of works with an emphasis on all phases of Filippo Palizzi’s career, which was very varied and articulated, as it was based on different experiences that led him to continuous experimentation, which landed on results of great modernity and with a breath of European caliber. In addition, the exhibition is accompanied by a rich catalog, also edited by Lucia Arbace, published by Casa Editrice Rocco Carabba and with texts by Franco Maria Battistella, Silvia Bosco, Maria Grazia Gargiulo, Alessandra Giancola, Stefano Menna, Rossella Napoli, Giorgio Napolitano, Maria Antonietta Picone Petrusa, Patrizia Piscitello, Sara Pizzi, Chiara Stefani, Maria Tamajo Contarini, and Andrea Zanella.
