Pistoia is preparing to welcome one of the most influential figures incontemporary art-Daniel Buren (Boulogne-Billancourt, France, 1938). From March 8 to July 27, 2025, the city will host a major exhibition dedicated to the French artist, promoted by Fondazione Pistoia Musei with the support of Fondazione Caript and in collaboration with Galleria Continua. The exhibition, curated by Buren himself together with Monica Preti, will offer visitors an immersive and meaningful journey through Buren’s rich creative journey.
The exhibition will be staged in the three museum venues of Palazzo Buontalenti, Palazzo de’ Rossi, and Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi, but the exhibition will not be limited to the museum spaces as it will also extend to the city and surrounding area, in an open and fluid dialogue with the urban and cultural fabric of Pistoia. This connection reflects the affinity Buren has cultivated with Italy over the years. The exhibition will include original works created specifically for the spaces of Pistoia Musei and a wide selection of the artist’s historical works and studies, illustrating key moments in his career.
The exhibition will allow visitors to explore Buren’s poetics, famous for his distinctive use of vertical stripes, which the artist uses as a “visual tool” to dialogue with space.
This exhibition is also a tribute to the relationship Buren has built with Italy. The interdisciplinary and site-specific approach that distinguishes his creations will make the event a celebration not only of his art, but also of the city and territory that host it.
