From Nov. 24, 2019 to Jan. 19, 2020, MA*GA andMilan Malpensa Airport are hosting a solo exhibition by Arcangelo(Avellino, 1956), a protagonist of the Italian and international art scene since the second half of the 1980s, entitled Le mie mani toccano la terra (My Hands Touch the Earth). The exhibition, curated by Emma Zanella, retraces the most significant stages of the Campania-based author’s career, marked by a succession of thematic cycles that, albeit in their autonomous genesis and development, are part of a clearly recognizable creative universe.
“My hands touch the earth,” reads the title of the review,“ says Emma Zanella, ”What earth? His land first of all, Arcangelo’s; a land that is inside every molecule of his body, a land that claims return, that acts through desire and memory, that generates dreams and images and symbols and colors, that generates his powerful works. But also the earth of each of us, the earth as a desire for concreteness, truth, fragrance and authenticity of feelings, sensations, emotions even. Arcangelo through great pictorial cycles tells about all of this: about the sacredness of life, people, souls, faces, stories that are current and ancestral at the same time."
The exhibition itinerary at MA*GA begins with the Terra mia cycle of the 1980s, a dazzling beginning of a then young artist who, while confirming his interest in returning to painting, unhesitatingly disentangled himself from the formal nomadism of the Transavantgarde and its often superficial rehashing of languages, iconographies and traditions. This was followed by other cycles such as Planets, Mysteries, Persian Carpets up to the last great compositions born from the suggestion and contamination with African lands.
In the Vip Lounge of Malpensa Airport, Terminal 1, from December 16, 2019 to March 10, 2020, Arcangelo stages the deep desire for travel that has marked and continues to mark his creative journey, continually solicited by ancient cultures, sacred and profane traditions, people who bring passion, feeling, memories, and narrative tensions.
The display is organized in stages that lead the passenger into the heart of Arcangelo’s poetics, where each pictorial cycle-in the Respighi VIP Lounge the Kenya Masai cycle, 2008-09; in the Pergolesi Room, Beirut , 2011; in the Monteverdi Room, Segou, 2009-19; in Sala Visconti, Sanniti, 2006; in Sala Montale, Fiori irpini e fioridi croco, 2017-2019 -,represents the layering of a “journey,” dedicated to a feeling, a vision, a land already touched or yet to be experienced. The land for the artist constitutes an inescapable point of reference to go elsewhere, and experience the suggestions and archetypes of places.
