Luxury is the protagonist of the exhibition “LUXUS - The Awe of Beauty” held at the Palazzo Reale(Milan) until Sept. 30. Promoted and produced by the City of Milan - Culture, Palazzo Reale and the Stefano Zecchi Foundation, the exhibition will take us on a journey of discovery of aesthetics and on the meaning of the word “luxury” through an exhibition of valuable objects between antiquity and modernity, between the West and the East, between craftsmanship and contemporary art.

Stefano Zecchi, curator of the event, as well as professor of Aesthetics, brings to the Royal Palace the glassware of the ancient glassworks of Venini, the precious jewelry of contemporary high craftsmanship of the Roberto Coin Maison, the watches of contemporary luxury signed by Damiani, and the artisan masks, signed by the Atelier of Venice Antonia Sautter.

“We must learn to understand what beauty is,” explains Zecchi, “because just as we like to surround ourselves with horrible things, believing that they are beautiful, so we delude ourselves that we live in luxury only because we surround ourselves with expensive objects: we then think that luxury gives us an image of great refinement and instead we are just boors. The same luxury object can be exalted and can be debased; it can confer charm or vulgarity. It is a matter of style, of elegance, of grace.The severe moral judgments condemning luxury are made on the basis of the way in which we make use of it, but the luxury object-its quality, originality, beauty, grace-has its own ethical innocence. It is born from the desire for beauty, created by brilliant artisans of art, and has a history.”
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog published by Silvana Editoriale.
