Luigi Ghirri's non-places on display in Jesi

The Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi is hosting, from April 9 to July 31, 2022, the exhibition "Luigi Ghirri (not) places," dedicated to the great photographer from Reggio Emilia.

From April 9 to July 31, 2022, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi presents the exhibition Luigi Ghirri (non) places, curated by Massimo Minini, an exhibition that consists of forty photographs from private collections, at its headquarters in Palazzo Bisaccioni. The aim of the exhibition project, conceived by Roberta Angalone, is to remember Luigi Ghirri (Scandiano, 1943 - Roncocesi, 1992) by analyzing his photographic research from the point of view of motivations and feelings through a path that touches on his points of interest and issues. A native of Reggio Emilia, thanks to his assiduous frequentation of the group of conceptual artists from Modena, Ghirri approached photography around the 1970s, his first shots were taken during summer vacations or weekends, and it was enough for him to realize that the camera would be the perfect medium, an incredible visual language capable of satiating the “desire for infinity that is in each of us.”

The exhibition opens with an initial introductory section, dedicated to the life and story of his approach to the photographic lens. Born in January 1943, he saw the world change in just a few years: from the postwar climate to that of the economic boom and the ensuing cultural ferment of the 1960s. Thus, inevitably, his personality sensitive to change and eager for knowledge is formed; photography becomes the means to look deeply at things, to know their origin and becoming. The itinerary continues with sections devoted to places, faces of time, non-places, art and finally Aldo Rossi, with whom he shares an interest in the suburbs, a space that, in the opinion of both of them, holds evocative force of history and memory. Ghirri is attracted to the environment that inhabits man, the one in which he moves, not to changes in the landscape, but to changes in living.

The artist’s is a universe that is at times melancholy, enchanted, suspended and romantic, finding meaning in small things, in the wonder and amazement that comes from looking at things without the veil of habit. With his shots he demonstrates how photography is the generator of possible worlds, never artificial and unreal, but always telling the perception of another truth, the result of the perfect “balance between detection and revelation.” Throughout his career Ghirri photographed an enormous amount of different subjects, deciding not to identify himself in a genre or style since he considered this a risky choice, a limitation of freedom of expression. His is a photography that opposes any kind of linguistic “censorship”; his investigations also remain deliberately open, not tending toward a single, definitive answer but lending themselves to infinite combinations and interpretations, consistent with his idea of photography.

The exhibition, with free admission, opens Monday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free guided tours by appointment. For info phone 0731 207523, info@fondazionecrj.it, website www.fondazionecrj.it.
