Starting today, the MASI venue at LAC Lugano reopens to the public and presents the photography project Lois Hechenblaikner. Ischgl and more. A pop-up project(ion), which can be visited until Sept. 6, 2020. The latest series of shots by Austrian photographer Lois Hechenblaikner documenting the lesser-known and irreverent side of the Tyrolean resort of Ischgl.
From the Alps, as a sublime and meditative meeting place with nature, to Lois Hechenblaikner’s powerfully expressive shots show a reality far different from the usual expectations associated with mass ski tourism and the consequent alterations of nature and humans that this entails.
The collection of images documents one of the most sought-after ski destinations. Not only a vacation resort but above all a destination foraprès-ski enthusiasts: concerts, nightlife, and often “over-the-top” events, defined by Hechenblaikner himself as Delirium Alpinum and which attracted media attention last March for turning Ischgl into one of the main outbreaks of Coronavirus infection in Europe.
The shots in the exhibition, however, are not exclusively related to the most recent events, but bear witness to the research of the photographer, who has been documenting various aspects of Tyrolean ski tourism for more than 30 years. In Ischgl, the artist wanted to immerse himself among the tourists in festive moments, often characterized by chaos, capturing moments to capture with his camera and also documenting the behind-the-scenes: the ski facilities, new buildings and nightclubs.
The expressive series of more than two hundred images, collected over long years of study, can be considered a sociological and photographic investigation of event culture and mass tourism, for a glimpse into the mechanisms of the mundane industry.
