An exhibition to present the third edition of the Fumetti nei musei initiative, curated by Mattia Morandi, Simona Cardinali and Chiara Palmieri. From October 14 to November 5, 2023, in the rooms of the Palazzo Ducale in Lucca, the exhibition unveils for the first time the plates of the third edition of the “Fumetti nei Musei” project, awarded in 2018 with the Gran Guinigi Award as the best publishing initiative of the year right here at Lucca Comics and Games. On the eve of the imminent distribution of the seventeen new albums in museum bookshops and Italian bookstores, the exhibition showcases the work of the artists selected to enrich this exceptional comic book journey through Italian museums. In this new edition, Sicily enters the Fumetti nei Musei project for the first time with two cultural institutes, adding further nuances and perspectives to the originality of the project promoted by the Ministry of Culture to enhance the richness and diversity of Italy’s cultural heritage. Now all regions are represented.
Here are the signatures and places of culture involved in this third edition: Maurizio Lacavalla for the National Museum of Matera; Juta for the Archaeological Park of Sepino; Simone Tso for the Archaeological Park of Sibari; Yi Yang for the Royal Palace of Naples; BeneDì for Biblioteca e Complesso monumentale dei Girolamini, Naples; La Came for the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Siena; Noemi Vola for the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna; Sarah Mazzetti for the State Archives of Agrigento; Luciop for the State Archives of Palermo; Francesco Guarnaccia for Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia, Rome; Pia Valentinis for the National Archaeological Museum, Cagliari; Rita Petruccioli for the Historical Museum of Liberation, Rome; Lorenzo Mattotti for the Archaeological Park of Cerveteri and Tarquinia; Miguel Vila for the National Museum Collezione Salce, Treviso; Nova for MAXXI - Museo delle Arti del XXI secolo, L’Aquila; Michelangelo Setola for the Real Sito di Carditello, San Tammaro; and Kalina Muhova for Castel del Monte, Andria.
The exhibition presents the covers and the first two plates of each new album, highlighting the increasingly close ties between the state’s cultural institutions and contemporary Italian comics, which are represented by artists of different generations, styles and languages. As with the previous editions, these seventeen comics are the result of total creative freedom that has allowed museums, archaeological areas, libraries and archives to be transformed into spectacular sets, where stories are set that take readers into past eras and extraordinary adventures, and where historical characters, legendary creatures, monsters, ghosts and superheroes are encountered. Comics in Museums aims to foster an innovative dialogue between artists and cultural institutions, in a close and continuous cross-reference between contemporary and ancient arts, consolidating and expanding the familiarity between new generations and places of culture.
The great success that has accompanied the release of each new Fumetti nei Musei album has transformed this educational project into a true publishing series that recounts the contemporary nature of cultural heritage through the pencils of some of Italy’s most celebrated cartoonists. The sixty-eight works, spanning numerous languages and different generations, have already become a point of view on contemporary Italian comics, which is studded with different genres and styles. Fumetti nei Musei also promotes a new dialogue between students and Italian cultural institutions, to bring new generations closer to cultural places: the comics are designed for children and young people, who receive them free of charge by participating in educational activities organized as part of the workshops and guided tours of state museums.
Comics in Museums is a project of the General Directorate of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, carried out in collaboration with the publishing house Coconino Press - Fandango and with the support of Ales Spa and the Center for Educational Services (MiC).
