The Napoleonic salons of the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan reopen on March 29, with the new layouts of seven rooms (the VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIV and XV), completely renovated: for the occasion, the Milanese museum also inaugurates the sixth of the "dialogues," the series of small exhibitions that reread the masterpieces of the collection with the help of works on loan. The sixth dialogue is titled Around the Loves. Camillo Boccaccino sacred and profane, is curated by Francesca Debolini and Marco Tanzi, and compares two works with mythological themes by Lombard artist Camillo Boccaccino (Cremona, 1504/1505 - 1546), namely Venus and Cupid, from the Geo Poletti collection and in the 16th century praised in a sonnet by Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo, and CupidReflecting in the Shield, along with the elegant Venus and Cup id by Giulio Cesare Procaccini (Bologna, 1574 - Milan, 1629), from a private collection as CupidReflecting. Not only that: in dialogue with the works there will also be another work from the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Madonna and Child in Glory with Saints Bartholomew, John the Baptist, Alberto da Trapani and Jerome that Camillo Boccaccino made for the Carmelite church of San Bartolomeo in Cremona.
“Unlike the previous dialogues, which proposed a direct juxtaposition of the works,” reads the presentation, "the sixth appointment invites the visitor’s gaze to wander, tacking on a theory of echoes and cross-references from one side of the room to the other. The arrangement will dynamically involve Room XV, as it includes the arrangement of Brera’s Madonna and Child on the back wall and the display of the works on loan(Amore che si specchia nello scudo and Venere e Amore by Boccaccino, and Venus and Love by Procaccini) on the right wall."
With the renovation of the Napoleonic rooms, the total transformation of the museum is almost complete, as Pinacoteca Director James Bradburne says: “In just over two years we have transformed 36 of the 38 exhibition rooms in the Pinacoteca, putting the visitor at the center of the newly enhanced permanent collection. The itinerary is clearer, more accessible and more exciting, enhanced with new types of captions and new benches. We are almost at the end of this phase, which ends on June 14 with the seventh dialogue: ready to take on the challenge of completing Franco Russoli’s vision of a Great Brera.”
Throughout Thursday, March 29, the opening of the renovated rooms and the sixth dialogue, the Pinacoteca di Brera will remain open with free admission, from 8:30 am to 7:15 pm. Visiting hours are the same as all other days (except Mondays, which are closed). The dialogue and rooms, from March 30 onward, can be accessed with the normal ticket: 10 euros full, 7 euros reduced. Free for all on the first Sunday of each month. Info at pinacotecabrera.org.
