The exhibition "The Art that Saves. Images of preaching between the 15th and 18th centuries. Crivelli, Lotto, Guercino." The exhibition, which can be visited at the Museo Antico della Santa Casa until April 8, 2018, is aimed at safeguarding works of art from places in the Marche region affected by the earthquake.
There are 41 works on display, including paintings, engravings, sculptures, manuscripts and volumes from the Marche region. The central theme of the exhibition is preaching: In the works on display, such as those by Carlo Crivelli, Lorenzo Lotto, Girolamo Muziano and Guercino, one can recognize the preachers of the great religious orders, Franciscans, Dominicans, Augustinians and Jesuits, the devotions they promoted with their images, but also the effect on the faithful through the emblematic case of St. Camilla Battista da Varano, the relationship with other religious faiths and the worldwide missionary thrust of the preachers of the Society of Jesus.
The exhibition officially opened the cycle of events “Showing the Marches,” the region’s two-year project that kicks off with Loreto and sees, in 2017, other exhibitions in Macerata and Ascoli Piceno and, in 2018, the three exhibition reviews in Fermo, Fabriano and Matelica.
“This is not just an opportunity to showcase the treasures saved from the earthquake, but the result of a long research on the activity of religious orders and the identity value of their preaching in the Marche region, which places lesser-known works of art alongside masterpieces divided into eight thematic sections,” explained Giuseppe Capriotti and Francesca Coltrinari, curators of the exhibition.
“The six art events are born with the intention of enhancing in the biennium 2017-2018 the cultural heritage of the areas affected by the earthquake, through the promotion of exhibition activities carried out using works of art from the museums and public and ecclesiastical collections affected by the last earthquake, and secured in the equipped warehouses of the Mibact,” explained Marche Region executive Raimondo Orsetti.
“A project that stems from close collaboration with Mibact and the region with various objectives, including reevaluating the post-earthquake region, deseasonalizing the tourist offer and providing promotional value at the national level,” added regional councillor for Tourism and Culture Moreno Pieroni and Mayor Paolo Niccoletti.
You can visit the exhibition from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Ticket price: 7 euros full, 5 euros reduced, including a visit to the museum.
