Letizia Battaglia's female nudes: in Puglia, the great photographer's new project

Internationally renowned photographer Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935) will stop in Puglia together with Roman photographer Roberto Timperi with an exclusive project dedicated to women: Nude. Battaglia and Timperi will inaugurate the fifth edition of ConTempo, the contemporary art festival directed by Valentina Iacovelli, scheduled from August 27 to September 1 between the cities of Conversano and Monopoli(Bari). Starting Aug. 27, shots by the two photographers will be exhibited in the Conversano castle and in the city streets, with an exclusive urban intervention. Both have oriented their lens on bodies, each according to their own style: Roberto enhances the “transversal emotions” of his subjects, linked to a relationship with the body out of the ordinary, Letizia in these reworkings repudiates previous photos related to mafia violence to give us back her vision of female nudity.

“I chose women because they are a message of vitality against death, women dare more, risk more, and even do more foolishness than men,” says Letizia Battaglia. A work of essentiality and subtraction in the image that goes with the festival theme chosen this year by Valentina Iacovelli: NOTHING ELSE. A reminder of artists’ ability to focus on the essence of things.

“ConTempo is a project dedicated to contemporary creativity,” says Iacovelli, “an interactive place where the most diverse forms of expression converge. The festival offers multidisciplinary cultural programming with events, exhibitions, performances. It is a space in motion that takes on different characteristics from time to time.”
