The great photography of Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935 - Cefalù, 2022) arrives in France. CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia has in fact formed an international partnership with the Jeu de Paume for the production of the exhibition dedicated to the Sicilian artist, one of the greatest Italian photographers of our time. The exhibition, curated by Walter Guadagnini, debuted on December 5 in Tours, where it is on view until May 18, 2025, at the Château de Tours.
The exhibition, titled simply Letizia Battaglia, represents the first stage of an exhibition that will continue in Arles during the famous Les Rencontres d’Arles festival, from July 7 to October 5, 2025. The project will culminate in 2026 with its arrival in CAMERA’s spaces in Turin.
Created in collaboration with the Letizia Battaglia Archive, the project celebrates the entire career of the Sicilian photographer, from her beginnings in Milan in the 1970s until her death in 2022 in Palermo. Through a selection of more than 200 prints, including vintage and modern prints, the exhibition offers an intense and profound visual narrative spanning decades of Italian history and life.
Letizia Battaglia is known for her extraordinary talent in capturing reality with an authentic and courageous gaze, capable of laying bare both the cruelties and the poetry of the world. Her images tell, without filters, about the Mafia, social injustices, but also about beauty and human resilience, returning a vivid and complex portrait of our time.
The retrospective reveals all the nuances of Letizia Battaglia’s art: from the raw power of her news images, which document with merciless lucidity the darkest years of the fight against the Mafia in Sicily, to the delicacy of her portraits, often female, imbued with a universal humanity. Each shot is a fragment of life, charged with meaning and emotional depth, evidence of an overwhelming passion that made photography the medium for interpreting and denouncing reality.
Walter Guadagnini, curator of the exhibition, stresses the importance of an exhibition of this magnitude, which is able to turn the spotlight on a key figure of Italian photography, celebrating his contribution not only to the world of art, but also to reflection on contemporary society: “We are happy,” comments the curator, “to collaborate with a prestigious entity such as Jeu de Paume to promote Italian photography internationally. This is an important initiative that, from abroad, will bring Letizia Battaglia’s work back to Italy in 2026, with an exhibition at CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin: another opportunity to celebrate a great protagonist of our photography.”
