On December 23, 2019, the exhibition The Nativity, from Caravaggio to Tiepolo, opened at the Chiostro del Seminario in Lecce. The exhibition, open until Jan. 2, 2020, showcases the works of Nicola Ancona (1950), a restorer and lecturer from Puglia, who also presents his work as a painter for the occasion (Ancona decided to devote himself entirely to painting at the end of his career). His works openly refer to the greats of ancient art, from Caravaggio to Tiepolo, taking up their styles and elements, even with direct quotations.
For the Lecce exhibition, Nicola Ancona proposes an interpretation of the theme of the Nativity with a journey through art history: from the masterpieces of the past, Ancona proposes a contemporary art that is completely faithful to ancient works, the result of an in-depth knowledge of the techniques of the masters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which Ancona reproduces with meticulousness and skill. The aim of the exhibition is to bring the public to look at things from another point of view and at the same time provide a spur to reflect on their meaning, as well as on themselves.
