Lecce, at the Biscozzi Rimbaud Foundation the solo exhibition of sculptor Salvatore Sava

Through Sept. 25, 2022, the Biscozzi Rimbaud Foundation in Lecce is hosting "Salvatore Sava. The Other Sculpture," a solo exhibition by sculptor Salvatore Sava.

Until September 25, 2022, the exhibition Salvatore Sava. The Other Sculpture, a solo exhibition by Salvatore Sava (Surbo, 1966), one of the most interesting sculptors of his generation in Italy. Surrounding two works by Sava that are part of the Foundation’s permanent collection, Sentieri interrotti of 1998 and Rosa selvatica of 1999 (Luigi Biscozzi and Dominique Rimbaud have always nurtured great admiration for Sava), an itinerary has been set up that includes thirty-five works that cover a wide span of the artist’s production, the subject of acute critical investigations by, among others, Luciano Caramel and Giuseppe Appella.

The intention of the curator, scientific director of the Fondazione Paolo Bolpagni, is to also exhibit several works (dating between the 1990s and today) that have remained unpublished until now, revealing aspects and research by Sava that have remained in the shadows, but are worthy of great attention. Indeed, the use in his sculptures of iron, Lecce stone, steel and, more recently, fluorescent colors has become proverbial, but in reality Salvatore Sava’s creative universe also includes different materials and media. In particular, the cycles of polymateric "blacks," works in wood, resin, fiberglass and enamel, and metal collages on cardboard will be presented for the first time, revealing a different face of the artist, whose expressive power will be a surprise both for those who already know him and for those who will approach his production without precognitions.

Salvatore Sava was born in 1966 in Surbo (Lecce), where he currently lives and works. His training took place between his city of origin, Rome and repeated stays abroad. He has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lecce since 1990. His first solo exhibition was in 1983. In his more recent activity he has favored work in three dimensions, but he also devotes himself to graphics, painting and photography, often dealing with ecological themes. Solo exhibitions include: 1996, Magica Luna, curated by Luciano Caramel, Castello Carlo V, Lecce; 1999, Tramontana, curated by Luciano Caramel, Galleria San Carlo, Milan; 2001, Salvatore Sava. Opere 1994-2001, curated by Luciano Caramel, Castello Carlo V, Lecce; 2009, Eliomorfosi, curated by Luciano Caramel, Galleria San Carlo, Milan; 2010-2011, Il candido presepe di Salvatore Sava, curated by Giuseppe Appella, Duomo di Orvieto; 2011, Le radici della speranza, curated by Massimo Guastella, MAP - Museo della Scultura Contemporanea, Brindisi; 2014, Follie barocche, curated by Letizia Gaeta and Massimo Guastella, Università del Salento and Monastero degli Olivetani, Lecce; 2019, Salvatore Sava. In 2006 he won the International Sculpture Prize “Terzo Millennio” in Erbusco (Brescia) and participated in the exhibition Scultura internazionale in Agliè at the Agliè Castle (Turin). In 2008 he won the Mastroianni Prize as part of the sixth International Sculpture Biennial of the Piedmont Region, in Turin. In 2010 he exhibited in the Gualtiero Marchesi and Great Italian Cuisine exhibition at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan and was present at the Gran Sasso Biennial of Sacred Art. In 2012 he won the Limen Arte Prize for sculpture in Vibo Valentia; in 2017 he participated in the collective exhibition L’arte e il suo calore, curated by Flaminio Gualdoni, in the Museo Civico di San Cesario di Lecce.
