The major exhibition The Ladies of Art has been extended until August 22, 2021. Stories of Women between the 1500s and 1600s currently underway in Milan in the rooms on the piano nobile of the Palazzo Reale(read our review here). Featuring more than 130 works, the exhibition is dedicated to the greatest women artists who lived between the 16th and 17th centuries: 34 women artists are rediscovered through their works, bearing witness to an intense all-female creative vitality, in a tale of exciting stories of already “modern” women.
Artemisia Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani, Fede Galizia, Giovanna Garzoni and more. Among these great names better known to the general public also new discoveries, such as the Roman noblewoman Claudia del Bufalo, who becomes part of this history of female art; but also works exhibited for the first time such as Sofonisba Anguissola’s Madonna dell’Itria Altarpiece, made in Sicily, in Paternò, in 1578 and never before left the island; as well as leaving Palermo for the first time is Rosalia Novelli’s altarpiece Madonna Immacolata e san Francesco Borgia, the artist’s only certain work, dated 1663, from the Church of Jesus in Casa Professa; or Lucrezia Quistelli’s 1576 painting Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine, from the parish church of Silvano Pietra near Pavia.
The exhibition, curated by Anna Maria Bava, Gioia Mori and Alain Tapié, is promoted by the City of Milan- Cultura and realized by Palazzo Reale and Arthemisia, with the support of Fondazione Bracco, and adheres to the I talenti delle donne (Women’s Talents) program, promoted by the Culture Department of the City of Milan and dedicated to the universe of women, focusing attention throughout 2020 and until April 2021 on their works, priorities and abilities.
