If we say Jack Kerouac, what do you immediately think of? To his literary work"On the Road," an icon of the Beat Generation.
Kerouac was also the author of paintings and drawings, to which MA*GA in Gallarate will dedicate a major exhibition from Dec. 3, 2017 to April 22, 2018.
Eighty works, mostly exhibited for the first time in Italy, will address his unprecedented artistic activity: his creative process in relation to the tradition of American visual culture and the other authors of the Beat Generation, from Allen Ginsberg to William Borroughs, and the masters of informal painting and the New York School.
The exhibition will be divided into several themes: from portraits of famous people to references to Beat culture, Kerouac’s relationship with Italy through photographs taken by Ettore Sottsass of his wife Fernanda Pivano, Allen Ginsberg and Kerouac himself.
Another section will consist of a video projection of Fernanda Pivano’s interview with Jack Kerouac.
Kerouac’s works have so far been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the ZKM in Karlsruhe, and have remained for decades in Lowel, the artist’s hometown, within the testamentary bequest managed by his brother-in-law and later sold to a series of private collectors.
The exhibition"Kerouac. Beat Painting" is curated by Sandrina Bandera, Alessandro Castiglioni and Emma Zanella, and is organized by MA*GA with the City of Gallarate, with support from Ricola, Art Heritage Foundation and Fondazione Cariplo, and in collaboration with Rivellino LDV, Locarno (CH).
