Kazuko Miyamoto's art coming to Madre in Naples

From July 6 to October 9, 2023, Madre in Naples will host an exhibition on the art of Kazuko Miyamoto (Tokyo, 1942), curated by Eva Fabbris. This was announced by President of the Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee Angela Tecce and Madre museum director Eva Fabbris. With this exhibition, which aims to be an expression of a broad and transversal look at recent art history and the intention to shed light on stories that are still little known within it, the new three-year program will be inaugurated.

The exhibition will be the first historiographic survey dedicated to Miyamoto by a European public institution. The exhibition will run between the second and third floors of the historic Palazzo Donnaregina, tracing the different phases and numerous media through which the artist’s practice developed from the 1970s to the early 2000s.

“Starting from a comparison with the figures in the permanent collection, such as Rebecca Horn, Jannis Kounellis and Giulio Paolini, the idea of exhibiting Kazuko Miyamoto at Madre means broadening the historiographic and socio-political perspectives with which the museum recounts the art of the immediate past, which is one of the roots from which to talk about the present and with the present,” Eva Fabbris explained to ANSA. “Miyamoto was born in the 1940s and left her native Japan to pursue an art career in the States, where she encountered Modernist languages: she embraced and transcended them, confronting them with her original culture. She is a feminist activist, curating the first exhibitions devoted to women artists from non-Western countries; she approaches art making without ever aiming at the production of the enduring and collectible object, privileging the value of gesture and the relationship between body and architecture.”
